Day 1: Arrival and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
On arrival, our guide will greet you and drive you to Volcanoes National Park. It is 105 km (2-hour drive) north of Kigali. Rwanda doesn’t allow single-use plastic material, so don’t bring any in your baggage. That’s how cleanliness is maintained in Kigali city and the country as a whole. Enjoy the Virunga Mountain scenery, capturing photos along the way. Arrive and check in at the lodge for diner and overnight. Ensure to arrange your hiking gears and charge your devices.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking
Fuel up with a hearty breakfast at the lodge. You will get to the park headquarters at Kinigi by 7:30 am in the morning. Meet your expert rangers and listen to the gorilla rules and regulations. Make sure to hire a porter if you need one for help. Take the rain jacket in case the forecast becomes unfavorable. You will be accompanied by park rangers into the forest for a thrilling search for gorillas until located which can take 1 to 5 hours. Spend a magical hour observing them in their natural habitat.
You will use a shorter to get to Kinigi ad your guide will take you to the lodge for lunch and leisure time. A late afternoon walk into rural community outside the park is recommended. This tour will introduce you to Rwandan culture and traditions at the Gorilla Guardian’s Village. You will meet ex-poachers who put down their weapons to conserve gorillas. Your day ends as they celebrate their rich cultural heritage which offers the opportunity to enjoy Rwandan traditional music performed by ex-poachers. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 3: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park through Lake Kivu
After early morning breakfast, travel along the eastern shores of Lake Kivu crossing the Congo-Nile divide ridge. Stop in Karongi for photo shoots and lunch along the way to Nyungwe forest national park in the south of Rwanda. Arrive at the lodge on the western edge of the forest near Gisakura tea plantation and entrance gate. Check into your accommodation and enjoy diner and overnight.

Day 4: Chimpanzee Tracking and Canopy Walk
Your chimp trekking begins with a wakeup call at 5:30 am. To give you ample time at the lodge for breakfast and packing all necessary gears like packed lunch and rain jacket. Then, head to the visitor center by 7:00am. Meet the rangers for a briefing on the day’s trek. From the park center, you may be driven further to the trailhead depending on the location of chimps. This is always communicated by the trackers that go to locate the primates ahead of time. Chimpanzees are more active in the jungle than the gorillas and can climb and forage into the treetops. So you might find yourself trekking deeper through the dense rainforest off the trail. Once they’re found, you will be allocated 1 hour to spend with the habituated wild chimps. Return to the park headquarters and get to the lodge in time for lunch and relaxation.
Afternoon canopy walk starts at Uwinka park visitor center with a relaxing stroll along the Igishigishi trail. The Nyungwe forest canopy walkway stretches for over 160 meters and rises 75 meters above the ground. It makes for a must visit gem for a kin photographer. There are three canopy bridges of varying height to choose for those with fear of heights. The stroll takes you through undisturbed dense evergreen tree fern vegetation. Rwandan naturalists here provide intriguing information about the plant species such as Cyathea manniana. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 5: Departure
After a rewarding day in Nyungwe Forest, depart for Kigali, concluding your 5-day Great Apes of Rwanda itinerary. Depending on your departure schedule, you may have time for a farewell souvenir shopping in Kigali. End of tour.

Day 1: Transfer from Kigali to Akagera national park
Embark on a journey to Akagera national park about 110 km (3-hour drive) east of Kigali capital city. You will stop along the way at Imigongo Art café for refreshments. Proceed via the southern entrance gate to the lodge overlooking the swamp fringed Lake Ihema, the park’s largest lake. The hippos tend to graze around the tents and the sounds of nature provide a perfect setting for wild nights. Akagera is the only savanna protected area of Rwanda where wildlife was devastated by the genocide. Thanks to the restorative conservation efforts. The Big 5 African animals which include black rhinos, lions, buffaloes, elephants and leopards have been restored and the numbers are steadily increasing. The money you spend further supports conservation through community projects such as the electric fence that reduces human-wildlife conflicts. The diverse habitats and scenery surely provides the authentic African wilderness safari experience you can ever imagine.

Day 2: Game drive and boat cruise in Akagera national park
The game drive experience in Akagera involves a lot of driving from south to the northern open plains of Kilala. There it is less bushy and you may spot more wildlife and also get out of the car and have picnic in the wild. Seeing all the Big 5 can be challenging due to low numbers, however. The zebras, giraffes, buffaloes, hippos, and antelope species like Impala, topi are abundant. There are over 500 species of birds including the papyrus gonolek and the shoebill stork. You will be back to the south by 1pm to do the boat cruise along Lake Ihema. The 3-hour boat ride offers opportunities to relax from the day’s drive and spot wildlife. Back to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 3: Akagera to Volcanoes National Park
Breakfast in Akagera and then travel back to Kigali city and stop there for refreshments. Proceed to Musanze town on the outskirts of Volcanoes national park. Check in your lodge with beautiful gardens, swimming pool, and view of the Virunga Mountains. Volcanoes National Park offers a high-quality gorilla trekking experience which is worth to save the endangered gorillas.

Day 4: Gorilla Trekking Experience
After breakfast early in the morning and transfer to Volcanoes national park headquarters at Kinigi. Meet the rangers and join in the briefing on gorilla trekking rules. You can request them to allow you visit a gorilla family depending on your hiking ability. Whether it will be a shorter or longer trek, the reward is worth the effort. You have one hour to spend watching the gorilla family members including silverback, females, and the playful youngsters. During that time, you must be careful to obey the instructions of your guide. Given that anything disruptive can ruin your experience. So try to be responsible and enjoy the moments. After the hour is over, you will hike back to the center to receive some gifts from the park warden. Then head to the lodge for lunch and relaxation.
The evening community walk offers an opportunity to positively impact the ex-poachers. It features a visit to the Gorilla Guardian’s village where you will take part in the event that showcases Rwandan culture, art, and music. It is an authentic and immersive cultural encounter that preserves stories while conserving gorillas for future generations. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 5: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park
Travel from Musanze to Nyungwe with a stopover along the way on the shores of Lake Kivu. Rwanda’s beautiful landscape is most impressive on this road trip. Arrive at the lodge on the western edge of Nyungwe forest famous for harboring 12 primate species including over 500 chimps, black and white colobus monkeys, Hamlyn’s monkeys, L’hoest monkeys as well as over 300 Afro-tropical birds of which 16 are Albertine rift endemics. Check in for dinner and overnight.

Day 6: Chimp Trekking and Canopy Walking
After breakfast, you will be given a packed lunch box and driven to the park center by 7am. The park warden informs you about the tracking rules and how long it may take to find the chimps. Usually it may take 2 to 5 hours depending on their location. It’s highly recommended that you hire a porter. Rest assured that you will get to spend 1 hour with the chimps. among other primate species including L’hoest monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys may be seen. you will return to the lodge or have your packed lunch and wait for the canopy walk starting at 2:00pm. The Nyungwe canopy walk offers an opportunity to enjoy spectacular views of the forest whilst walking 75 meters above the ground. The canopy walk lasts for 1 to 2 hours after which you will return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 7: Transfer Back to Kigali
Enjoy breakfast, you will depart from Nyungwe for a 224 km (6-hour drive) to Kigali city. This includes a cultural tour at the Ethnographic museum in Butare along the way. The museum displays artifacts about Rwandan people and their culture. Proceed and arrive in Kigali city early afternoon and head to Khan Kazan restaurant for a delicious lunch. Mindful of your departure flight, you may visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial which takes one to two hours. Finally, you will be taken to the airport for your onward flight.

Day 3: Golden Monkey Trekking and Departure
Golden Monkey Tracking: On your final day, embark on a golden monkey tracking adventure in Volcanoes National Park. This activity offers another unique encounter with the playful golden monkeys for 1 hour as you trek through the bamboo forest. After golden monkey tracking, return to your lodge for check-out procedures. Bid farewell to Volcanoes National Park and embark on your journey back to Kigali city. Depending on your departure schedule, you may have time for a farewell lunch or some last-minute souvenir shopping. You will be transferred to Kigali International Airport or your next destination, marking the end of your three-day ultimate gorilla tracking adventure.
Those intending not to do golden monkey tracking can opt for a cultural tour. Visit the Gorilla Guardian’s Village for a taste of Rwandan culture en route to Kigali. Proceed to Kigali city and visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial and lunch. You will then be transferred to the airport or your accommodation to mark the end of 3 days ultimate gorilla tracking Rwanda.

Day 2: Chimpanzee Tracking and Canopy Walk
Wake up early in the morning for breakfast and head to the designated starting point for chimpanzee trekking. Gisakura to the west, Uwinka in the center and Kitabi to the east.
You will be breifed about the guidelines and regulations for trekking and be accompanied by experienced Rwanda Development Board guides and trek through the lush dense tropical forest of Nyungwe in search of chimps among other fascinating primate species such as colobus monkeys, Hamlin’s monkey, red tailed monkeys may be spotted. Once the chimps are found, observe chimpanzees for one hour in their natural habitat.
After an exhilarating morning of chimpanzee tracking, return to your accommodation for a hearty lunch and some relaxation. In the afternoon, gear up for an unforgettable canopy walk experience. Walk along suspension bridges and elevated platforms, offering panoramic views of the forest canopy below. After the canopy walk, unwind with a well-deserved dinner at your lodge.

Day 3: Return to Kigali city
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at your accommodation, soaking in the final moments of your Nyungwe adventure. Thereafter, check out from your lodge and begin your journey back to Kigali. The drive back offers another opportunity to admire Rwanda’s stunning landscapes and countryside.

Day 3: Gorilla tracking in Bwindi impenetrable forest
After your early breakfast (7:00am), you will have short drive to the UWA briefing center where you will be taken through the dos and don’ts while tracking gorillas. After you have been allocated a gorilla family in a group of 8 Pax, you will be led by the armed ranger guides off to the forest to search for the gorillas. When gorillas have been located, you will have one full hour viewing them as they go on with their daily lives at a distance of 7-10 meters. After gorilla tracking, we drive to lake Bunyonyi for a night on the terraces of lake Bunyonyi. Dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
After breakfast, we drive back to Kigali where we will have lunch and later proceed to Volcanoes national park in the norther part of Rwanda. The drive to Volcanoes national park is scenic and will introduce you to the land of 1,000 hills. Volcanoes is famous for mountain gorillas and golden monkeys and tomorrow you have an option of choosing what primates you would like to visit.

Day 5: Optional Golden Monkeys or Gorilla Tracking and Transfer to Lake Mutanda, Uganda
After an early breakfast, you’ll drive to the visitor center to attend a briefing session conducted by park rangers about the guidelines to follow for this adventure. Once you have been allocated a gorilla family, you will be accompanied by experienced trackers to this serene tropical rainforest. Once gorillas have been located, you will spend a magical hour observing them up close. You’ll learn about their behavior, social structure, and conservation efforts to protect them.
You’ll enjoy a packed lunch amidst the forest, savoring the unique experience of dining in the gorilla’s natural habitat. Later, you’ll transfer via Cyanika border town of Rwanda to southwest Uganda where you will continue to drive to Lake Mutanda for a sumptuous dinner at your lodge, sharing stories and memories with fellow travelers or guides.

Day 6: Transfer to Bwindi With Community Tour in the Evening
After a relaxed morning, take on optional activities on the lake and then transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Lake Mutanda is very scenic and calm which means a dugout canoe or any other activity is recommended. After you optional activities and magical views from the lake, we drive to Bwindi for lunch and evening community to visit the Batwa communities. Dinner and overnight at the edge of the forest.

Day 7: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi

Day 8: Transfer to Ishasha – Queen Elizabeth National Park
After breakfast, drive from Bwindi to the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park. Queen Elizabeth National Park is undoubtedly Uganda’s most visited park, and the Ishasha sector is famous for its tree-climbing lions. This day is dedicated to exploring the vast plains of Ishasha which borders with Rwindi Plains of Virunga National Park in DR Congo. Keep an eye out for elephant herds, bushbucks, Topi herds, a mix of cape and forest buffaloes, and Kobs, among other wildlife. Dinner and your overnight stay will be in the Ishasha sector.

Day 9: Morning Game Drive and Afternoon Kazinga Community Boat Trip
After breakfast, you will have a final game drive as you depart to Kasenyi plains, the northern section of the park. Check in at your lodge, have a hot lunch, and prepare for the afternoon community boat cruise on Kazinga Channel.
The 32 km tropical channel is famous for its hippo population, which is said to be the highest on the African continent. Other wildlife can be sighted here, including African elephants, Cape buffaloes, waterbucks, a variety of birds, and reptiles like the Nile crocodiles. Dinner and your overnight stay will be at the edge of the park.

Day 10: Morning Game Drive and Evening Crater Driver
After breakfast, you will embark on a final game drive in Queen Elizabeth National Park as you transfer further to Kibale Forest National Park. After lunch, you will drive towards Fort Portal town, where, if time allows, you can enjoy a drive around the explosion volcanic crater lakes. The craters are part of the beautiful scenery of the region, and a walk to the top of the world is an experience that will blow your mind away. Dinner and your overnight stay will be at the edge of Kibale Forest.

Day 11: Am chimpanzee Trekking and Afternoon Bigodi Walk
After breakfast, you will drive to Kanyanchu to join others for a briefing before heading into the forest with rangers in search of chimpanzees, following their calls and tracks. Once the chimpanzees are located, you will spend one hour with them, learning more about their behavior and habits. Chimps share 98% DNA with humans and they’re man’s closest relatives.
In the afternoon, take a walk in Bigodi Wetlands, a community project aimed at improving the lives of the communities. There are 8 primates and 200 bird species in Bigodi swamp, offering you primate and bird watching opportunities. Look out for olive baboons, red-tailed monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys and various bird species such as the Great blue turaco. Enjoy a cultural encounter with the local communities. Dinner and your overnight stay will be at the lodge.

Day 12: Scenic Drive to Murchison Falls Park with an Evening Game Drive
After breakfast, we will transfer to Murchison Falls National Park, starting with a tour to the top of the falls and ending the day with an evening game drive. There is also an optional night game drive to experience the park under the stars and see the other side of wild Africa after dark. Dinner and your overnight stay will be at the edge of the park.

Day 13: Morning Game Drive and Afternoon Waterfall Boat on River Nile
After breakfast at 6:30am, we will head out for a game drive in search of cats that might still be busy with a kill or avoiding the wet grass. Keep an eye out for lions, leopards, elephants, spotted hyenas, African serval cats. Among the herbivores include Cape buffaloes, Nubian giraffes, baboons, monkeys, and more.
In the afternoon, we will take a shared boat cruise to the bottom of the falls, searching for animals that come to drink and cool off along the banks of River Nile, such as elephants, waterbucks, giraffes, buffaloes, Nile crocodiles, monitor lizards, hippos, and many bird species. After your boat cruise on the mighty Nile River, you will have another game drive before heading back to the lodge for dinner and your overnight stay.

Day 14: Ziwa Rhino Tracking and Transfer to Entebbe
After breakfast, we will transfer to the Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch, where you will have the opportunity to track rhinos on foot with the help of armed rangers who will guide and protect you throughout the experience. You may also see giraffes, zebras, hartebeests which were recently introduced to the sanctuary. After a hot lunch, we will drive to Entebbe for your flight back home.
